O silêncio mundial sobre o que está acontecendo no Tibet é uma dessas coisas que envergonham a humanidade. O pau está literalmente cantando e os “humanistas” estão em silêncio constrangedor. Há algum tempo a China possui um salvo conduto para fazer o que quiser dentro de seu território. Por que? Por sua importância econômica para o mundo atual? Por manter vivo, para alguns, o sonho do comunismo? Por representar um contra-ponto aos Estados Unidos?
O fato é que, tirando a mídia e algumas ONGs, nada se comenta e se espera que a situação se resolva logo, de preferência antes dos Jogos Olímpicos. E a ONU? Por que não se manifesta? Ah, mas a China é do Conselho de Segurança, nunca aprovariam nada contra ela. O que nunca impediu que criticasse os Estados Unidos, não?
É claro que a China não quer abrir um precedente, permitir a independência do Tibet seria uma senha para novos movimentos separatistas, mas o mundo ocidental não precisa concordar com massacre de civis, foram 100 mortes no fim de semana!
O fato é que os humanistas são rápidos em denunciar violações de direitos humanos… desde que não sejam por parte de socialistas. Afinal, estes só querem o bem da humanidade…
Bom, a ONU pode não ter se manifestado mas muita gente fala há anos sobre o que acontece no Tibet. É claro que a questão é política mas não acho que tenha nada a ver com o fato da China ser socialista; tem mais a ver com interesses econômicos de países que querem continuar amiguinhos…
Já houve várias demonstrações populares aqui no Canadá sobre o Tibet e como vc disse, há muito que ONGs, a mídia, e estrelas de plantão falam sobre o assunto.
É claro que não tenho muito acesso ao que se publica no exterior, mas que os intelectuais são bastante tolerantes com os socialistas, é um fato.
Pegue o Gabriel Garcia Márquez por exemplo. Até hoje ele não viu nada de errado acontecendo em Cuba. O José Saramago só em 2003, depois do fuzilamento de três dissidentes cubanos que tentaram fugir da ilha, resolveu “romper” com Fidel. O que estava fazendo antes quando o paredão rolava solto por lá?
Existe o óbvio interesse econômico em evitar qualquer atrito com a China, mas isto é questão dos estados. Mas na mídia em geral o que vejo é silêncio.
Veremos nas Olimpíadas como vai ser.

However profitable our transplanted factories are, however low the basic wages of Chinese workers (especially compared to Canadian wages), however wonderful we rightly regard Chinese culture and Chinese ingenuity as being, we must not forget the full reality in the hodgepodge of compromises we make to do business and keep the peace. That reality means that we have sufficient hope in the Chinese people that we will not abandon our own values and their best dreams, that we understand what the Belgian sinologist Pierre Ryckmans (writing under the pen name Simon Leys) meant when he told us “we are all Chinese,” that when we say we will not boycott the Olympics we do not at the same time shut up about what we know is wrong.
In short, we are called upon to be witnesses, and as witnesses we can make a difference. We can assist the Chinese people in uprooting the evil that the Chinese Communist party is still mired in. If we don’t, the turmoil will return, again and again. That, at least, is a reasonably safe prediction, and the one that the Chinese Communist party doesn’t want to hear
