Uma mistura de rock e jazz, instrumental é a pegada do Booker T & the MG´s, que lançou seu primeiro disco em 1962, o estupendo Green Onions. Descobri esta banda no ano passado a partir de uma dica do falecido Neil Peart, que adorava o baterista. Uma trilha sonora para momentos de reflexão, leitura ou simplesmente tomar um bom whiskey.

O cinema do Frank Capra, o Chesterton de Hollywood. Ao longo dos anos 30 e 40, Frank deu voz especialmente ao homem comum, oprimido pela associação funesta dos grandes empresários com os governantes, ou da economia com a política. Chesterton condenava igualmente comunismo e capitalismo, que considerava não como opostos, mas como siameses com o mesmo DNA, o do materialismo. Sua solução era a exaltação do homem comum e dos pequenos negócios. Dele é o meu filme favorito de todos os tempos: A Felicidade Não se Compra (1946), que junto com Mr Smith goes to Washington e A Herança do Mr Deeds nos apresenta o retrato do homem comum, aquele que tem acima de tudo o bom senso.

Já que falamos de Chesterton, outra dica é Hereges. Escrito no início do século XX, trata-se de um conjunto de ensaios que retrata males que ele via surgir na sociedade moderna que se não fossem refreados causaria grandes danos para o homem. Infelizmente ele estava certo e estes males se espalharam pela terra e ele viu bem o que se tornaria o mundo 100 anos depois. Destaque para o ensaio em que ele defende porque não devemos beber álcool por algum motivo racional e apenas porque não precisamos. Espelha com outro ensaio em que aponta que o fato dos muçulmanos não beberem ainda seria um grande problema.

Do filme Meet John Doe (1941), outro do Frank Capra, que assisti esta semana, vem a quarta dica: fraternidade. Sempre digo que a política moderna se dividiu entre os partidários da liberdade e da igualdade, sendo a fraternidade esquecida por todos. A mensagem do filme é tratar bem os vizinhos, eles estão carregando um fardo também e nem temos idéia de como eles podem nos ajudar. Em tempos de amizades virtuais, poucas crianças brincando nas ruas e que mal falamos com nosso vizinho de porta, algo se perdeu. Precisamos recuperar, como já dizia o falso John Doe em 1941.

PS: De quebra ainda tem a maravilhosa Bárbara Stanwyck. Ela tinha uma beleza difícil de definir, absolutamente encantadora.

In our struggle for freedom, we’ve hit the canvas many a time, but we always bounced back because we’re the people — and we’re tough.

But we’ve all got to get in there and pitch. We can’t win the old ball game unless we have teamwork. And that’s where every John Doe comes in. It’s up to him to get together with his teammate. And your teammate, my friends, is the guy next door to ya. Your neighbor — he’s a terribly important guy, that guy next door. You’re gonna need him and he’s gonna need you, so look him up. If he’s sick, call on him. If he’s hungry, feed him. If he’s out of a job, find him one. To most of you, your neighbor is a stranger, a guy with a barkin’ dog and a high fence around him. Now you can’t be a stranger to any guy that’s on your own team. So tear down the fence that separates you. Tear down the fence and you’ll tear down a lot of hates and prejudices. Tear down all the fences in the country and you’ll really have teamwork.
